About Our Client

Our Client is a reputable law firm with a strong presence in the South Lakes, Lancaster and Morecambe Bay areas, offering expert services across various practice areas. They are known for providing tailored legal solutions to our clients and are currently seeking a skilled and detail-oriented legal assistant specialising in private client law to join our dedicated team.

Overview
As a legal assistant/probate paralegal working in the private client department, you will support fee earners in managing the legal process of dealing with a deceased person’s estate. This includes preparing key documents, handling client communications, and ensuring that all legal requirements are met. Your work will ensure that estates are administered efficiently. This role is an excellent opportunity for a legal assistant looking to deepen their expertise in private client law within a professional and client-focused environment.

Duties

  • Assist in all aspects of probate and estate administration, from obtaining a grant of probate to the distribution of assets.
  • Draft and submit probate applications, including Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration, and liaise with the Probate Registry.
  • Prepare and file legal documents such as estate accounts, Inheritance Tax (IHT) forms (e.g., IHT400, IHT205), and Estate Accounts.
  • Communicate regularly with executors, beneficiaries, and other relevant parties, providing updates and gathering essential information.
  • Conduct legal research on matters relating to probate and inheritance tax.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements and relevant inheritance tax legislation.
  • Liaise with HMRC regarding inheritance tax calculations, payments, and clearances.
  • Manage case progress by keeping up-to-date with deadlines, required documents, and procedural updates.
  • Assist in the preparation of estate accounts and final distributions to beneficiaries.
  • Maintain accurate records, case files, and ensure organised documentation for each matter.
  • Liaise with banks, valuers, and other third parties to obtain necessary documents and valuations for estate administration.
  • Reporting to senior fee earners on progress and working under supervision particularly on complex cases.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working primarily on probate and estate administration matters
  • Strong knowledge of probate rules and administration procedures specific to England and Wales.
  • Experience with HMRC forms including IHT400, IHT205 and supporting schedules and working with HMRC on estate tax matters.
  • Excellent attention to detail for drafting documents, including probate applications and estate accounts.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work compassionately with clients during sensitive times.
  • Proficiency in legal research and document preparation.
  • Familiarity with case management software and other relevant IT tools including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • A CILEx qualification or a degree in law is preferred but not essential
